Majority of the houses that have flat or almost flat roofs are topped with built up roofing that are made from layers of asphalt coated roofing felt. The top most layer of these asphalt roofs are generally covered with gravel or crushed rock which helps in holding the roofing material down and also protects it from the harmful effects of the ultraviolet rays. Light colored gravel also helps in reflecting sun’s rays. This type of roofing system is commonly termed as tar and gravel roofs. Such built up roofs can last for a fairly long time – as long as one to two decades, depending on the severity of the weather in that regionTar and gravel roofs are typically used on hose roofs that have very low slopes – ranging from almost flat to somewhere around 3-in-12. This kind of roof is formed by alternating layers of asphalt and tar paper (for the new and contemporary homes, more sophisticated materials are being used) that are adhered with applications of molten asphalt; with the traditional tar and gravel roofing, the tar is covered with a thin layer of gravel; this helps the tar from getting damaged by the ultraviolet sunlight. This also gives a nice finish to the roof if it is well maintained. The life expectancy of such roofs is almost 20 years.

TAMKO’s first headquarter was an old streetcar barn – this long, narrow structure was ideally suited to accommodate a roofing production company. In spite of the dearth of raw materials due to the Second World War, Mr. Craig took up the challenge and within one year TAMKO was not only up and running but also supporting the war effort in the year 1945!
